Sorcerer’s Apprentice

Disney has for years brought us movies to entertain us.  Be it a lion being born completing the circle of life.  Or a little mermaid wanting to gain the ability to walk on land and fall in love.  Or even two kids trying to make it to a mountain so they can go back home in their spaceship.  Disney has for years brought us different types of movies to love and enjoy.
Which brings me to this review of a film that I myself enjoyed but for some it didn’t.  Even Disney has had a miss from time to time but I don’t believe this time it’s a miss.  Might not be a massive hit but it wasn’t a flop.  The movie I speak of is The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.  This story has been told by Disney several times before twice in an animated perspective with the 1940 film Fantasia and again it was told in the 2000 sequel Fantasia 2000.  Now ten years later the same premise of the story would be told in live action.  The Plot is patterned behind the usual stories of Good vs. Evil and the triumph of good overpowering the evil villain.  I’ll say that in my opinion this concept was done very well and as well the cast chosen for this film.

The main villain’s role of Maxim Horvath belongs to Alfred Molina a season veteran actor of both stage and screen.  Maxim Horvath was a friend of Balthazar and he of course fell to temptation’s darker side of power through the corruption of another magic user who is named Morgana Le Fay who is played by Alice Krige.  Who is known for her role as the Borg Queen from Star Trek’s First Contact.  Yes, that Morgana who in turn is the reason this whole mess starts to begin with.  Now if you want to know how Morgana and the other magic users play their parts I say watch the film I do recommend it.  Now, the hero’s part was played by two actors one is the accomplished actor Nicolas Cage who played the part of Balthazar Blake and the second hero is played by Jay Baruchel who is known for playing his namesake in the film Knocked UP.  Plays the part of Dave Sutler the one who is destined to follow in the Merlin’s footsteps.  Yes, I did say “Merlin’s footsteps” and didn’t you see that one coming?  I know I gave that bit away by mentioning Morgana Le Fay’s name.  And, that’s all I am going to tell you and if you want more, then I am afraid you will have to go and see the movie.  And, I will not be giving out spoilers I believe I’ve given enough.  Now, don’t look at me like that.  All I’ve given you was two names the rest you can deduce on your own and, believe me all magic movies are based around the concept of good vs. evil.  And, after you see this film you can decide if you like it or not but I believe if you are all a fan of fantasy and magic I’m sure you’ll all like this film.

Now, I will say this that for some people this movie won’t entertain you or appease you.  This film does not have aliens, well it does have a large Chinese dragon but that’s not alien now is it…oops sorry bout that almost gave something else away didn’t I?  Where was I?  Oh, yes…or large amounts of explosions or gunfire.  What it has is a lot of special effects and allows you to watch a world like ours be manipulated by the power of thought and magic.  And, for some of us it was done right and for some others it was not.  Probably could be that were expecting something totally different but the entire main points were there.  Plot, character design, good costuming, expensive cars hehehe I have a friend who values movies based on the cars they use so even that will satisfy him.  And, good triumphs over evil what else is there?  Well, maybe more dragons but I’ll say that even the acting was decent I mean it isn’t academy award winning but was still decent.  I myself have come to the conclusion that a lot of people out there have nothing else better to do than to bash a movie just because they feel it’s not up to their expectations.  I believe that this movie is good enough to watch and enjoy.  So I say go out there watch and enjoy and make up your own opinions.  And, allow the magic of the screen take you to somewhere far away and fill your senses with wonder and dreams and if it’s only for a short time enjoy it for that time.   Since movies are actually only there to transport us away from our usual bland worlds to places only reachable in dream and thoughts.  This is Darth Chew leaving you with these words.  Magic is something that we all have and can use; it’s within our minds called thought and imagination.  Now, go watch a movie or something I know I am.
